The Best New (and New to Me) Albums of 2025
These are the ten new albums that I enjoyed the most. They're mostly 2025 releases, and are offered in no particular order. No long reviews this year, but I offer a few listening notes. As usual, I've added links under the album or track names.
Give them a listen, they're all exceptional!
Half Waif - See You at the Maypole - 2024
Pretty, haunting, gorgeous, and bristling, all at once. Gives me shivers even after a few dozen listens.
Aeon Rings - Enemy - 2022
Trad. darkwave, very well executed. It's value to you will be immediately apparent if it's a thing that you'd value.
FKA Twigs - Eusexua - 2025
Her work has been culminating to this. Wild, moody, and full of surprises. Give it a few spins.
Sharon Van Etten - Sharon Van Etten and the Attachment Theory - 2025
Sharon Van Etten with a full band, making gauzy, faintly gothic rock? A delightful experiment, and there are still strong echoes of her folk here.
Circuit des Yeux - Halo on the Inside - 2025
Difficult to describe; dark and mighty weird. It evokes a particular late 90's production aesthetic without being fully encompassed by it: Perfect Drug era NIN, Mechanical Animals era Manson, with occasional forays into Venetian Snares style madness. Basically "Canopy of Eden" could have been a track on the Lost Highway soundtrack without anyone batting an eye.
Oklou - Choke Enough - 2025
Speaking of charming fin de siecle throwbacks, this record would have been right at home with the cuter side of the late 90's trip hop explosion (think Moloko goofing off not Portishead smoldering). Shimmering and clever.
Saya Gray- Saya - 2025
Saya Gray continues her delightful journey into weird pop music, gradually becoming more tuneful, but still pleasantly odd.
Deep Sea Diver - Billboard Heart - 2025
Modern dream pop with rock flourishes. Complex composition that never feels labored, and lots of hooks. An easy listen.
Djrum - Under Tangled Silence - 2025
The only working IDM artist that keeps surprising me year after year. Lots going on, but also quite subtle, rewards headphone listening.
Austra - Chin Up Buttercup - 2025
A career highlight, the songs are moving, lively, and have plenty of memorably peculiar turns of phrase. Maybe the best thing they've done since Feel it Break?
Honorable Mentions
Some other artists released albums I enjoyed recently as well, but they didn't quite make the top ten. Each honorable mention links to a memorable song/track from the album.
