The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

The road goes ever, ever on. Probably my sixth read of The Hobbit, but this time I was reading it to my young daughter. It was a delight to revisit it through her eyes, especially because my first read was when I was only a year or so older than her. Some parts took some explanation, but she was really into it throughout, which was exciting.
She struggled especially with the argument about the Arkenstone at the end, in part because her concept of money/treasure isn't well developed yet; she couldn't understand what they were arguing about, and why they were willing to kill each other over it. Probably a good sign at this age.
We rewatched the Rankin/Bass animated version and I asked her to pay attention to any differences in the story. With no prompting, she spotted the absences of Beorn and the Arkenstone in the animated version. Sharp girl!
